The Carrboro Design (Business) Cooperative was formed in 1993 by a small group of designers and architects who were committed to creating an affordable and productive working atmosphere as well as encouraging creative collaboration. The group evolved and is now more “inclusive” of other types of business, but the mission remains the same. We are now home to approximately 14 businesses in a great office space at 103. W. Weaver. to catchup, get inspired and take care of Co-op business.
Offices range in size from 100 square feet to 600 square feet and we’ve been known to play musical offices to accommodate an expanding or contracting business that needed more or less space. Rents range from $225-$1800/month and include all the above amenities (DSL is extra but is less than 15/month). We operate on an agreement that each business will be responsible for our “portion” of the total costs based on our occupied space. That means that if we have a shortfall or windfall of operating income or loss that we share it in that way as well.
Instead of “leases” we have contracts that obligate us to pay rent on our individual spaces until we find a suitable replacement or until 6 months after we give the Co-op written notice of our intention to vacate.
One month’s rent is required as a security deposit – a portion of which is refundable. In order to keep the rents affordable members of the coop volunteer their time to keep the Co-op running, whether it’s to change the light bulbs, run out to get supplies or make a small repair.
